The Colours Hitting the Spring Catwalk
The colours hitting the spring catwalk for 2013 run the palette from soft, earthy tones to bright primary shades that pop off the runway. Fashion Week in both London and New York saw designers revisiting some classic combinations, with black and white duos making prominent appearances on both sides of the Atlantic. Some shades have carried over from the fall palette but fashion followers can also expect to see many trendy new colours appear for this coming season.
The colour of the season for spring 2013 is blue. Pantone's definitive colour report is headlined by Monaco Blue, anchoring the spring palette with a classic blue reminiscent of deep waters and sailor stripes. Blue appears again in the Pantone report in Dusk Blue, a soft neutral that evokes evening and pairs beautifully with the season's brighter shades. New York Fashion Week observers spotted blues in shades from sky to electric backing spring's most notable prints.
Pretty pinks have been brought over from the fall season and pink has been spotted on the runways in shades varying from Donna Karen's feminine purple-toned amaranth to Oscar de la Renta's eye-popping electric fuschia. Though pink did not appear in the Pantone report, it's appearance on runways everywhere from metallic pink Burberry trench coats to rosey Marchesa evening gowns mean that pink is colour to watch in spring 2013.
Other shades in the spring palette reflect the traditional return to soft and bright colours as fashion drifts away from winter's darks and neutrals. Green appears three times in the Pantone report, from a muted Asian-inspired jade through classic emerald to Tender Shoots, a bright bouncy green that recalls the vitality of spring.
Citrus colors will also occupy a popular place in the spring color scheme. The consistent appearance of orange shades in seasons past will culminate in this spring's Nectarine. Nectarine is a sophisticated coral shade that sets off a wide range of skin tones and wears well with many other spring colors. The Pantone report also notes the emergence of Lemon Zest. This bright, zingy shade of yellow is the perfect counterpart to winter's darker shades and makes a beautiful pairing with the darker blues in the spring palette.
The soft, exotic African Violet evokes the tender and tropical notes of spring and appears in some of the runway's African-inspired collections. The shade is often incorporated into the season's color-blocked geometrics or as a background for the brighter colours in spring prints.
The boldest colour fashion watchers can expect this season is Poppy Red. This striking stoplight red heralds the emergence of warm weather and will likely trend into summer and fall colour palettes. Bold poppy red makes appearances in this season's bolder florals and also acts a signature color for solids and primary-inspired collections.
There is truly something for everyone in this spring's runway colours. From classic combinations and sophisticated shades of cobalt and jade to playful combinations of pink and greens, fashionistas this season have gorgeous shades to shop this coming season!
